Today I've been posting on a few different strings and I've hit on something that strikes me as weird--I hit post and a dialog box pops up telling me I can't post for X-number of seconds. I have to wait out the countdown before it will let me post.

Um, why?

(also, it can't count very good--it was 31 when I started this post and only to 7 before this parenthetical; believe me--I was not typing that quickly--I even had a midpost conversation)

I just had "You can't post in the next 1 seconds" followed immediately by "You can't post in the next 59 seconds" on the same post.

I believe that you are experiencing Eric is a mechanism to prevent flooding i.e. the repeated posting of spam forum threads by automated bots.

I think it might not be functioning properly. Also, it's a pain for someone like me that has different threads open in different tabs and may be writing multiple replies simultaneously.

Since we have to be logged in to post, is is really necessary?

...9 seconds....

I just wanted to say that this issue has kept me from posting several times now. Am I alone?

I had hoped that, being a member, this would no longer be an issue, but the forum is still preventing me from posting on a thread without a seven-day waiting period. It seems that membership should be proof enough that I am not a spambot?

What thread is it keeping you from posting in, Eric?

Any thread at all.

Here's how I usually read this forum:

I open every active thread into its own window. I read them sequentially, but tend to switch back and forth from tab to tab as I compose my replies simultaneously. Then, after I post my first one, it won't let me post the others, telling me I can't post again for X seconds. The clocks seems to reset every time I try, as well. I've ended up just leaving my thoughts unposted on more than one occasion.

Part of the reason I don't leave as many comments as I used to is because I don't like having to wait five minutes before hitting "Post". It's very frustrating.

I understand the spambot fear, but a spider has endless patience. I don't. The spider will wait around endlessly. I can't. Assuming my experience isn't unique, is this "protection" really worth it? I wonder how many other people have been stymied in trying to leave comments? I imagine it must have a chilling effect (as it certainly has had on me).

Wow. I wouldn't have thought of approaching the forum that way. No wonder you're having problems.

That kind of "protection" is beyond my skills, but I'll check with Jacob Proffitt who should know whether it's something we can adjust or not.

I agree that you'd think a registered poster (as opposed to someone who hasn't been giving posting powers) should not need to be "protected" against.

The "Flood" setting for the forum was set at 120 seconds. I've reduced it to zero. I don't foresee any issues with that but if any arise, we can always adjust later.
