Hi all,
I've been in or on the peripheries of AML for four or so years and have been an off-and-on contributor to our now dearly departed listserv but since we're in new digs, I figured a reintroduction is in order:
* Name -- Mark Sheffield Brown. The middle name is my mother's maiden name. She grew up in Springville and her father taught seminary there. With a first and last name like Mark Brown, I'm glad my parents did something to spice up the mix a little.
* Age -- 33, turning 34 in January. I never thought I'd be this old and I also never thought I'd feel more or less the same as I did ten years ago when I was this age.
* Sex -- Occasionally.
Ha ha! Sorry, that's an old joke from the TV show What's Happening. J.J. Walker replied that way when a woman at the DMV was asking for information for his driver's license. I'm male, clearly.
* Family Status -- What does this mean exactly? We're all doing pretty well but winter is coming on so a few of us are congested and have a cough? Alive and well? I assume it is referring to things like are you married, how many kids do you have, how old are they, etc. I've been married to one extremely patient and forgiving woman for the last nine years. I have two daughters -- one is 5, the other is almost 7.
* Home Town -- Rexburg, Idaho but I've lived in Pocatello, Blackfoot, American Falls, Boise, and Twin Falls as well as a variety of towns and cities in Mississippi and Louisiana.
* Occupation -- I teach English and am a grad student in Film Studies.
* Connection to Mormon Literature (reader/writer/teacher/critic/other) -- I'm Mormon and I read, write, and critique. I'm really interested in the idea of Mormon art, Mormon literature, Mormon cinema, etc. I earned an MFA in poetry from Boise State and my thesis was a series of poems that told the story of a rebellious LDS teenager growing up in an eastern Idaho farm town. Now that I'm in a PhD program, I'm focusing on Mormon film, specifically the work of Richard Dutcher. The arts are what really thrill me in life and I love it when my spiritual/religious life is somehow activated by good writing, painting, film making, etc.

Welcome to the AML Discussion Board, Mark.
And thank you for setting such a good example in your introduction. It's great to know a little about you.

"I earned an MFA in poetry from Boise State"
No kidding? How long ago was that? I was there working on a MA in English in 04-05.

Hey Eric,
I was there from 2000 - 2003 so must have left just as you were arriving. I worked most closely with Janet Holmes, Martin Corless-Smith, Michelle Payne, Bruce Ballenger, and Devan Cook. Who were your main teachers when you were there? Did you have a good experience?

I thought there was more overlap, but it looks like I had an entirely different group. Hansen, Lojek, Markel, Martin, Mattison and Sanderson. I much preferred the BYU English department, but I have no complaints about Boise St. It was a good time.
