The writer Norman Mailer passed away on Saturday at age 84. He wrote "The Executioner's Song", a Pulitzer Prize-winning, hugely applauded book about the murderer Gary Gilmore. Out of the hundreds of voices heard in this "nonfiction novel" many were hostile to the church, but a few showed sympathetic understanding. The book was probably the first, most extensive exposure many readers had to Mormonism, for better or worse. A very tough, definitive takedown of the man's career can be found at: http://pajamasmedia.com/xpress/rogerkimball/2007/11/10/norman_mailer_a_dissenting_vie.php

Thanks, R.W. for posting this Norman Mailer piece. I liked The Executioner's Song very much. It was interesting to read about N.M. so many years after reading the book.
