Below is a news piece from the Deseret News about Greg Park winning the USABookNews.com "Science Fiction Best Book Award". Another Mormon author, Janet Kay Jensen, also was a finalist in the "Fiction & Literature: Religious Fiction" category for her recent novel Don’t You Marry the Mormon Boys (Cedar Fort). Jensen's novel has gotten some recent buzz for being a good first literary novel.
But I must point out that the award does not seem very legitimate. It appears to me to be just a money-making venture by USABookNews.com. It is not looking at all published books, just those who pay the $59 entry fee. The list of award-winners was not very impressive.
Deseret Morning News Science fiction writer wins Best Book Award Published: December 13, 2007 OREM — A science fiction fantasy written by a local teacher has won the National Best Books 2007 Award. Greg Park, who teaches English, Japanese and creative writing at Timpanogos High School in Orem, wrote "Veil of Darkness" in the spring of 2007 and has since published "Cleansing Hunt." The novels are the first in a five-book fantasy adventure series titled "The Earthsoul Prophecies."
The story is about a dying world's struggle for survival that presents a unique look at coming-of-age, magic and divinity.
Park has told the Deseret Morning News he feels it's important to show his students what he is trying to teach them.
Both books are published by Bladestar Publishing and are available from most local bookstores.
