. As I'm scrolling down a thread to pick up the conversation where I left it, there is no indication of which posts are new since I was last here--or if there is, it's so subtle I haven't noticed it. A little orange star or something would be a big timesaver and much appreciated.

You are right, there is no indication, subtle or otherwise, as to which posts are new since your last visit. It only shows which threads you have not visited, and orders them so the ones with the most recent posts are on top of the forum. Starring the posts that are new to you is an interesting idea. Would it be every post new to you, or only posts new to you since your last visit? Does it cause a problem that if you click through a page but don't read the posts, those posts will all be unstarred as if they had been read? I wonder if anyone has seen this on another board, I'm curious how it would work. In our current set-up, there is a difference in the icons for threads with unviewed posts--perhaps that's something we could make a more obvious difference in the future. Has posts you haven't seen: Has the same posts as before: Right now what I've been doing, is I usually enter a thread at its latests post, then scroll up or back to where I remember the conversation. The link to the lastest post is the small square with the green triangle pointing to it.

. I have seen this done in other forums, and it's just a little icon like the ones you posted next to each post--the ones I have not read being orange rather than white. And I haven't found it to be a big deal, them being marked just when I visit, regardless of whether or not I read them. Chances are if I look at them yet don't read them now, I won't tomorrow either. The flood of information prevents that.

Other discussion boards have a way to know if you have either read or viewed a post. Is that what the icon of the paper with or without the lines is about? Of course, I can't really tell whether there are lines on the paper icon or not, but that is a personal problem I will need to work our with my optometrist and the vendor of my computer monitor.
As it stands now, I cannot remember where I have been, and I waste a lot of time scrolling through things trying to remember whether I already read them or not.
It is a bit frustrating.
Thanks for any suggestions on how to manage this aspect of the discussion board. I am a linear kind of guy, and this is very painful for me, sorry.

Larry, you're right, of course, that the graphic is too subtle. What a painful laugh I had at your line about the optometrist and computer monitor vendor. I tried to brighten it up--it's not artistic but at least it's more visible. This still only marks topics containing posts you haven't seen, it does not mark the posts themselves. Marking individual unseen posts sounds like a great idea, but technically beyond me at this point. I'm especially puzzled at how the server would distinguish between posts you've read and posts you haven't read when they're on the same page, I guess it would really mark pages you've visited. I'd still like to visit a forum where the marked-post feature is in action...it might help me eventually implement something like it.

. One that did work--and does, except no one's posting there anymore, is at http://www.quantummuse.com/forum.html. My membership is on the blitz, but I'm pretty sure http://www.animationshow.com/Forums/ does it as well. I know for sure that http://www.blue-beta.com works that way, but it's difficult to get a membership and without one it's impossible to snoop around. I believe http://www.galacticcactus.com/forum also works that way. Hope one of those will prove useful.....
