These House Rules are based on the House Rules that were used for the AML List.

1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF (when you register, please use your real name)
Some of the things you can tell us include your
* Name
* Age
* Sex (for all the Lynns and Robins and Kims out there)
* Family Status
* Home Town
* Occupation
* Connection to Mormon Literature (reader/writer/teacher/critic/other)
Please do this in paragraph form (and leave out any items, except your name, you don't want to include)

2. BEHAVE
* No flaming or name-calling. Reply to posts, not people. Respect the integrity, opinions, and beliefs of others.

3. THE TOPIC IS LITERATURE AND /OR FILM
* It is not politics, pet peeves, the general authorities, or even religious beliefs (except as they affect interpretation). It is also
not a forum for the discussion of scriptures per se or your interpretation of them..

4. ALL AML MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO REGISTER and all others are welcome to read
* ... writers and readers, scholars and fans, teachers and students, highbrows and lowbrows, conservatives and liberals, members and non-members of the LDS Church and the AML, at home and abroad. No one approach is preferred.

Other Guidelines

1. REGISTERED AML MEMBERS CAN POST ON ANY LDS LITERARY TOPIC

2. PUT THE AUTHOR AND TITLE IN THE SUBJECT LINE
When referring to literary works, please put the writer's last name in all capitals in the subject line, followed by the title, like this:

PETERSON, Backslider

3. FEEL FREE TO START NEW TOPICS IN THE CATEGORIES (Introductions, Discussions, Reviews, Announcements) SET UP FOR THEM
Registered AML members are encouraged to comment on whatever you're reading or viewing off-line. If no one else is reading or viewing the same thing, start a new thread, or continue with one long-dead. Your post will be archived, and over time we'll build up a good sample of responses. Hopefully some day scholars and fans will want to come to our archives whenever they pick up a book, old or new.

5. USE FIRST NAMES
In the spirit of openness so prevalent on the Internet, we request that all use their given names, rather than surnames with titles. Handles are inappropriate on the AML Discussion Board.

6. AML DISCUSSION BOARD IS MODERATED FOR TONE AND VOLUME
Not everything posted may stay on the Discussion Board. A post may be deleted:
* if it's off-topic. We do define literature broadly, and frequently run items on other LDS arts or on LDS culture or language issues. Beyond that, inclusion is at the discretion of the moderator.
* if it includes bad language. We have noticed that whenever someone uses a curse, no matter how mild, someone follows it up with one worse. For this reason, the moderator sometimes deletes posts with fairly innocuous language.
* if it includes explicit sexual references, or
* references to the temple. People have different levels of tolerance, but these items, together with bad language, do tend to make many Latter-day Saints (and others) uncomfortable and to put a damper on discussion. In general, AML Discussion Board conforms to accepted journalistic standards. You can quote more than you can say, but in general, if you can't use a word in the Deseret News, you can't use it here.
* if it veers too far into Church doctrine, policy, or the opinions of the general authorities. It may be appropriate to discuss these in relation to specific literary works, market conditions, etc., but when the conversation turns to establishing just what those doctrines and opinions are, or whether you think they're justified, that discussion belongs on another forum. It is never appropriate to attack or belittle the religious beliefs of another, or to use those beliefs to condemn or suppress the opinions of another.
* if it's redundant. The moderator may cut off a discussion that has gone on too long by locking the topic. Depending on how many people are involved, this may take place behind the scenes or publicly (in the latter case usually after a day's notice).

Please note that, due to time constraints, the moderator is no longer able to provide every deleted post with an explanation. If you have a question about a specific post, please contact the moderator.

7. AML DISCUSSION BOARD IS COPYRIGHTED
All posts belong to their authors. Just as with any published writing, messages that appear on AML Discussion Board should not be quoted without proper attribution, nor reprinted on another Internet venue or in any other form without the author's permission. By posting to AML Discussion Board, authors give permission to the AML to distribute their posts with the AML Discussion Board archives.
