A group of us are gathering to discuss Todd Petersen's story collection LONG AFTER DARK at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3rd, at the La Frontera Mexican restaurant on 106th South in Sandy, Utah. (It's tucked into a corner of the strip mall across 106th South from the big mall.)

If you plan to attend, drop a line to chrisbigelow@gmail.com so we can get an idea of how large a table we need.

You're welcome to come whether you've read Todd's book or not. This Mormon book discussion group is intended to meet on the first Saturday evening every other month, so our next meeting will be Jan. 5 (book yet to be determined).

Here's an item about Petersen's book:

Salt Lake City Weekly, second annual Utah arts awards

BEST LDS SHORT-STORY COLLECTION
Long After Dark by Todd Robert Petersen

The contemporary Mormon experience is rarely portrayed with the clear-eyed empathy conveyed in these 16 stories by Southern Utah University professor Petersen. Unafraid to allow his characters to stumble as they try to understand their faith—or their struggles with it—Petersen creates stories that inspire without ever feeling simplistic. This should be the model for LDS literature: compelling warts-and-all human stories in which there are more sublime happy endings than baptisms and temple weddings.

I had the pleasure of joining Chris and his lovely wife Ann and a few others for the discussion on Saturday night. The smothered burrito was muy excelente, as was the company and the conversation. Our next book will be The Backslider, the classic of contemporary Mormon lit, and we'll be meeting the first Saturday in January (the 5th) to discuss it. Come, come, everybody!! Put it on your calendar! Who can beat a night out with smart, interesting folks, discussing smart, interesting books?

Okay, so I'm enthusiastic, but not THIS enthusiastic! Sorry my comment showed up so many times. I kept getting an error message whenever I would try to post, so I finally just gave up. But it looks like my message pierced through the ether somehow. Sorry for the clutter!
